There are a number of interesting uses for this transparent sphere in your business presentations. We will discuss them towards the end of the article. Let us learn to create the sphere from scratch.

Step 1: Draw a circle

Use ‘Oval’ tool in auto shapes menu to draw a circle while holding the ‘Shift’ tab. Ensure that its width and height is “3 inches”. Fill the shape with the color of your choice and remove outline.

Base Circle Shape

Step 2: Convert the circle into sphere

Right click on the circle and go to ‘Format shape’. Under 3D Format – go to Bevel. Click on the ‘Top’ surface and choose the bevel preset called ‘Circle’. Choose the same preset for the ‘Bottom’ surface too.

The next step is to increase the width and height of the bevel to convert the circle into a sphere. The calculation to achieve that is – add 36 pts for each inch of the diameter. In our case, the diameter of the circle is 3 inches. So, we add 36 X 3 = 108 pts to width and height of both the surfaces as shown below:

Step 3: Make the sphere transparent

Issue wit reducing transparency

You can’t make the ball transparent by reducing the transparency of the fill. If you do so, the result will be a mess as shown here:
A better way is to alter the ‘Material’. For this, go to 3D format tab. Under ‘Surface’ option, click on ‘Material’ drop down menu. In the options provided – choose the preset called ‘Clear’:
