Sometimes when you create slides for your eLearning projects or for your self-running presentations, you need ways to engage the attention of your audience constantly. A little bit of creativity goes a long way in grabbing and holding the attention of your audience. In this article, we will show you an interesting way to showcase your images in PowerPoint. Here are some examples of the result you can achieve with the technique you are about to learn.

Let us learn to create the effect in a step by step manner.

Step 1: Choose an icon

The first step is to choose the icon that will act as the background for your pictures. The icon could be of a TV, LCD panel, Smart Phone, Laptop etc. You can find some public domain images as shown below:

Step 2: Punch a hole in the screen

The next step is to punch a hole in the screens of these icons to stick your photos. For this, draw a rounded rectangle shape that fits the shape of the screen as shown below.

Rounded rectangle shape Adjust the yellow handle of the rounded rectangle to match the curvature to the screen. Remove the outline. The result will be as follows:

Covering Icon with Rectangle Select the image of the icon and the rounded rectangle while holding the ‘Shift’ tab and press ‘Cut’. Now, paste them back as PNG image using ‘Paste special’ option.

Go to Format -> Recolor -> Set transparent color and click on the blue color inside the image. This will punch a hole in the screen:

Step 3: Place your picture behind the icon

The last step to showcase photos in PowerPoint is to stick your picture behind the background image, so it shows through the screen:

The advantage of punching a hole in the screen, rather than sticking the image on the screen is – you can add any kind of animation to your picture. In fact, you can place multiple images and have them enter on cue to make the visual look more interesting.
